This building was erected in 1907 as an exhibition hall. It is named for Sir Thomas Dale (1570?-1619), Governor of Virginia 1611-1616. Inside the Dale House a gallery provides a window on the archaeologists' laboratory where the artifacts are washed, numbered, mended, identified, researched, illustrated and stored. Some of the more interesting artifacts are exhibited in a display which changes frequently to incorporate the most recent finds. The artifacts excavated thus far date from the late 16th and early 17th century and include ceramics, glassware, weaponry, armor, tools, furniture hardware and other objects used by the early colonists as part of their daily life. The artifacts are not just English but are from all over Europe and Asia and represent the global trading patterns at the time of settlement. Filling in some of the gaps left by historic documents, these objects comprise an invaluable resource for knowledge about life in early Virginia. Next Stop |
