Prentis House SOLD Suffolk, Virginia 1805
The Prentis House built c. 1820 is one of the oldest and finest examples of Federal-style architecture in Suffolk. It gets its name from Peter B. Prentis a judge who owned the house and had his legal practice on the property. Later the legal office was moved to the back of the house and attached as a kitchen. The Prentis House sat vacant and deteriorating for years when the Revolving Fund Program purchased it in 2001 to save it from demolition. The Revolving Fund Program sold it in 2001 to a developer who undertook an exhaustive and complete restoration. The Prentis House is a contributing structure in the Suffolk Historic District which is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The house is under protective easement with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Currently it is used as the visitors center for Suffolk and proudly serves as the gateway into this historic town.
