Barnes House SOLD Stafford County, Virginia 1810
.The Barnes House is a one and one-half story, clapboard frame building on a stone foundation. The the gambrel roof has three dormers. The house probably dates sometime after the mid-eighteenth century. A kitchen was added on the back with its own stone and brick chimney. A later shed addition was added to the kitchen. In 1850 the house was purchased by Harrison B. Barnes from Joseph B. Ficklen. The house remained in the Barnes until 1920 when it was sold to neighbors Gari and Corinne Melchers. When the Melchers died the Barnes house and their home (Belmont) was given to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The house was sold to an individual and the Revolving Fund Program purchased the Barnes House in 2006 to save it from severe neglect. The Program sold it in 2006. The Barnes House is a contributing structure in the Falmouth Historic District which is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The building is under protective easement with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. A complete restoration is underway.
