Preserving for the Future to be Focus of Virginia Preservation ConferenceWednesday, September 10 2008 Preserving for the Future: A Capital Idea!, the 23rd annual Virginia Preservation Conference will be offered by APVA Preservation Virginia and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in Richmond, Virginia, October 5-7th, 2008. The conference will offer a diverse program featuring a variety of subjects including sustainability; rural and urban planning; cultural landscapes; tourism; the African American community and historic preservation and technical issues for homeowners and historic preservation commissions. Session panelists will include nationally-recognized representatives from the National Trust for Historic Preservation; the National Park Service; and the United States Green Building Council and individuals representing Virginia organizations and state and local governmental agencies.
Monday's keynote address will be given by John V. Moeser, Senior Fellow of the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, University of Richmond and Professor Emeritus, Urban Studies and Planning, Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Moeser will present Recapturing the American City, a look at the physical and social attributes of the 19th century walking city and the forces that played a key role in the degradation of urban neighborhoods. He will offer insight in recapturing the vital qualities which made these communities thrive. Tuesday's keynote address, Sustainability of Historic Sites in the 21st Century, will be presented by James Vaughan, Vice President for the Stewardship of Historic Sites for the National Trust.
A special Monday, October 6th luncheon session on statewide African American Historic Preservation will be offered at the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church. The session is open to the public but requires registration. There is a charge for this session which includes lunch and a tour of Jackson Ward.
APVA Preservation Virginia is a registered provider of the AIA/CES program. Many of the conference sessions will also qualify for continuing education credits from the American Institute of Certified Planners.
