This object was used in English fabric production to stretch the cloth on a frame for drying after it had been washed and beaten. Forty tenter hooks have been excavated from James Fort where they were probably used by the colonists to stretch and dry the animal skins they were receiving in trade from the Indians. Furs were a welcome commodity in London and the colonists were encouraged to trade for them.
