Lead Inkwell

Jamestown Rediscovery

lead inkwell

A lead inkwell from Pit 1 is also indicative of literacy in the fort. This view from the top shows the decorative flange around the inkwell's opening, which has alternating fleurs- de-lis and faces. Lead was a preferred material for inkwells because the lead helped to maintain the dark color of ink.
