Brass Book Furniture

Jamestown Rediscovery

Book Furniture

This brass book clasp from Pit 3 is decorated with 5 Tudor rose stamps. Book clasps were attached to the covers of books to secure the books in a closed position. This object reflects that there were individuals in the fort who could read and write. For the most part, only the gentlemen were formally educated at this time.
