John Marshall House Programs:
Three Branches of Government
The students will discuss and complete primary source activities related to the U.S. Constitution and the establishment of the Three Branches of Government. They will review what the Branches are, explore their responsibilities, and show how they interact with each other.
This exploration of the system of Checks & Balances that is the cornerstone of our Federal Government will involve the students in charting some outcomes of that arrangement.
Students will explore the relationship between the system that was established by our Founding Fathers and the structure as it exists today. The program also includes a visit to the home of John Marshall, the Chief Justice whom many historians feel did the most to firmly establish the duties of each of the Three Branches.
Judicial Review
The students will consider the term Judicial Review and what it means in our system of laws. A discussion of Marbury v. Madison, the first U.S. Supreme Court case to apply the principle of "judicial review," will help the students explore the complexities of our Constitutional form of government. Using primary sources, they will be asked to predict the outcome of several real-life Supreme Court decisions regarding Constitutionality.
A visit to the home of John Marshall, the Chief Justice who presided over the Marbury v. Madison case, will ensure that students will comprehend the impact this case has on their lives today.
The Supreme Court
Using primary and secondary sources, the students will identify and describe the function of the Judiciary Branch of our Federal Government. They will explore the mechanisms that have been established to meet the needs of our constitutional democracy. Engaging in an activity to decide the relevancy of cases previously heard by the US Supreme Court, will allow the students to determine the value our system brings to their lives.
John Marshall was responsible for creating much of the power that the Supreme Court has today. Touring his home will offer the students an opportunity to glimpse the life of one of America's most important patriots.
