 
The south bedchamber was used by John and Mary Ambler Marshall's five sons, Thomas, Jacquelin, John, James, and Edward. All five sons were formally educated and attended university, although only Thomas finished his degree. Marshall's sons were unable to carry on his great legacy; Thomas served in the Virginia Legislature, but died young, and the remaining sons lacked their father's ambition.
