The second floor of the Marshall's home was a private space. Visitors were not generally allowed upstairs, so the furnishings are simpler and the rooms lacked the elaborate woodwork and wallpaper that characterizes the first floor rooms.
The north bedchamber was originally used by John and Mary Ambler Marshall's daughter Mary. After Mary was married in 1813, the room served as a guest bedroom. Mary ultimately inherited the house from her father after his death in 1835.
