APVA Preservation Virginia, through the leadership of its Southeastern Branch is developing a state of the art welcome and education center for the Lynnhaven House and the Virginia Beach community. The structure, at just under 4000 square feet, will house the welcoming functions for your visit to The Lynnhaven House (1724). Ticket sales, museum store operations and orientation videos, as well as restroom facilities, will be housed largely in the first of three 'pods' of the structure. The center pod will house the administrative functions as well as docent training and staging areas for tours of the historic house. The third pod is a large community room for special programs, educational events and community meetings. It and the deck that surrounds the entire structure offer magnificent views of the restored Lynnhaven House.
Within the hallway that connects all three areas of the structure, as well as two designated museum rooms, an exhibit on the history of the region and the Lynnhaven House's part in that history is to be featured. The exhibit will focus particularly on the development of water transportation and its role in the history and growth of the region from the earliest colonial days through the early Republic period.

All of this experience is in preparation for your visit to the Lynnhaven House itself. This significant survivor of the yeoman class housing in colonial Virginia provides an unparalleled glimpse into the life of middle class planters in mid 18th century Virginia.
The Lynnhaven House remains open during the construction period. The Colonial Education Center at Lynnhaven HouseSM is scheduled to open to the public for the 2006 visitation year. Visit this site again to check on our construction progress!
