East Palisade
Remains of what could have been the east palisade line were uncovered just north of the East Bulwark. To be certain this was actually the fort wall, test units were excavated at 50 foot intervals following the projected line of the wall. Remains of the palisade trench were found in all three tests. The test just south of the church indicated that the church yard had never been plowed. This allowed archaeologists to establish the original depth of the palisade trench.
In the test just north of the church tower the palisade trench was intact, however it appears as though the palisade posts where removed rather than rotted in place. This could have been a result of the palisade being removed during expansion of the town or possibly at the time of the fire of 1608.
