Pommels were used to balance the weight of the blade on swords and other edged weapons. This pommel was from a small dagger that would have been used in the hand opposite the sword to protect the other side of the body.

Dagger Pommel, iron, early 17th century. Context: Ditch 1, ca. 2nd quarter 17th century.
