2008 Historic Preservation Awards

Look around your neighborhood, school or workplace. Who is doing something proactive to preserve Virginia's architectural and archeological heritage? The APVA Preservation Virginia Awards committee invites members of communities throughout the Commonwealth to nominate potential recipients for Virginia's annual Preservation Awards. Award winners will be recognized on Monday January 21 in Richmond. The APVA Preservation Virginia Awards have been given since 1971, honoring Virginians who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to preservation.

Awards will be given to homeowners, commercial property owners/developers, architectural firms, local governments, civic organizations, preservation project team members or individuals for efforts that have preserved and protected the architectural and archeological heritage of Virginia. Projects associated with nominations must have been completed in 2007 and focus on the rehabilitation of structures at least 50 years old (unless infill in the Outstanding Domestic or Commercial Project categories). Projects must be located within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Award Categories Include:

Outstanding Domestic Project
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor for a project that exemplifies a profound effort and sensitivity in preserving a domestic residence.

Outstanding Commercial Project
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor/developer for a commercial structure that that has been rescued from deterioration and restored to a viable use.

Outstanding Adaptive Use
Presented to the owner, architect or contractor/developer for a preservation effort that has demonstrated creativity and sensitivity in adapting a structure designed for one use into an appropriate alternative use, thus reinventing the use of a space while at the same time preserving the architectural integrity of the original architect or builder.

Outstanding Public Sector Preservation Project
Presented to the government entity, architect or contractor/developer for outstanding preservation of a publicly owned structure or landscape.

Outstanding Service in Community Preservation
Recognizes an activity or project that has made a significant contribution to an historic area in Virginia. Examples would include an effort to save a critical structure, creation of a revolving fund, exceptional efforts by a historic preservation commission or neighborhood association such as the establishment and maintenance of a newsletter or website. If the nomination includes an achievement relating specifically to a construction project, photographs must be included. If it is a tangible, non-construction project, such as a newsletter, a copy or representative issue must be included with the nomination.

Outstanding Historic Preservation Research
Recognizes any individual or entity that has made a significant contribution to the cause of historic preservation in Virginia through research and/or education.

The Young Preservationist (s) of the Year Award
Presented to a person or youth group, comprised of members eighteen years of age or younger, who have made a notable contribution to preservation in Virginia. This award not only recognizes excellence, but also the profound need to attract young people into Virginia's preservation movement -- if it is to continue to thrive.

The deadline for nominations to the above categories is 17 December 2007. The award for Distinguished Historic Preservationist, the APVA Preservation Virginia Founder's Award, and the APVA Preservation Virginia Award of Honor will be presented at the 2008 Virginia Preservation Conference in the fall and the Distinguished Preservation Craftsman for 2008 will be announced at Restore Virginia.
